![]() Neighborhoods Rittenhouse Square/Fitler Square Arguably the highest "rent" district in Center City and centered around lovely park with the same name, laying claim to posh apartment buildings and stately victorian rowhomes. Home to the flagship of one of Brooke's favorite stores, Anthropologie, among other high end chain retailers and boutiques alike. There are plenty of trendy nightspots in this area as well as fine dining...favorite spots to see and be seen, including Parc, Rouge and Pearl as well as more relaxed places such as The Irish Pub and Rum Bar. Art Museum/ Fairmount Adjacent to Fairmount Park, the nation's largest and oldest municipality-operated park, as well as picturesque Kelly and West River Drives where many Philadelphians go to run, bike, and walk their dogs. Watch crew teams on the Schuylkill River along the famous Boathouse Row, or enjoy visiting the plethora of restaurants, small shops and bars that this area has to offer. Fairmount Avenue is home to one of Brooke's favorite antique stores within city limits! The Philadelphia Museum of Art houses one of America's great collections of art...and if you visit, be sure to run up the Art Museum steps like the droves of other people you'll see! It's also home to the Eastern State Penitentiary, which along with Singh-Singh, formed the basis of the American prison system. Although it's no longer in use as a prison, it serves as a wonderful museum and is currently in the process of being carefully preserved and in some cases, restored. Nightspots to hit include Bishop's Collar, Rembrandt's and the London Grill. Brunch at Sabrina's is not to be missed! Spring Garden/ Logan Square These neighborhoods are near along the Ben Franklin Parkway. Check out Franklin Institute with its planetarium and Omniverse Theater, and the dinosaur exhibits at the Academy of Natural Sciences. Local pubs with upscale grub are sprouting up all around Spring Garden...check out St. Stephen's Green and the Belgian Cafe. Washington Square West In "Wash West", you can find coffeehouses, shops, sidewalk cafes, and nightspots. Live on quaint, cobblestone streets like Camac and Hutchinson or in condos in the grand house of Portico Row on Spruce Street. Pine Street's Antique Row, Jewelers' Row (the country's oldest jewelry district) and sweet little boutiques along Spruce, Pine and 13th make this area one of the best for shopping! This neighborhood is also home to the Forrest Theater, the Walnut Street Theater and some of our favorite BYOBs. Neighbors Lolita and El Vez serve up some of the best margarita choices in town for those warm, Summer nights. We'd be remiss to not mention local bath products makers Duress and Langel on 13th and Brooke's choice salon, Salon Ricochet. Naked Chocolate and Capogiro are perfect ways to end the evening! Old City Nightlife is most vibrant in Old City, where commercial buildings have been converted into loft apartments and you can enjoy a lot of square footage for your money! This neighborhood sits along Penn's Landing with views of the Delaware River and Benjamin Franklin Bridge and concerts at Camden's Suquehanna Bank Center and the Navy Shipyard are just a short ferry ride away! First Fridays fill up local galleries here which are the most concentrated here. Home design and clothing boutiques line Second and Third Streets. Second Street is home to all sorts of late night entertainment from upscale dining at Amada to pubs like Triumph and Eulogy to independent rock shows at the Khyber and Tin Angel. Brooke's favorite ice cream shop, Franklin Fountain, sits near Front and Market. Our favorite home store, Foster's Urban Hardware, is in the Colonial Penn building at Market and 4th. This area is rife with historical landmarks. Society Hill Society Hill, which was once completely deteriorated in the 1950's, is home to beautifully renovated Colonial homes alongside luxurious high-rise buildings and baby boomer brick rowhomes to form one of arguably the prettiest areas of the city. It is home to Headhouse Square, which is now home to a weekend market as it once was! Enjoy legendary Philadelphia seafood or Colonial fare, and invite friends who visit to stay at cozy Bed & Breakfasts in the neighborhood. Enjoy close proximity to Penn's Landing here as well! Queen Village and Bella Vista Just South of Society Hill, you'll find these lovely neighborhoods, home to many early 19th Century "trinities" (fathers, sons and holy ghosts--or one room on each floor with traditionally the kitchen housed in the basement) or observe many larger, modern rowhomes. Dine and shop at the newly renowned Italian Market area, known for the dueling cheesesteak stops, Geno's and Pat's, as well as some of the freshest and affordable local produce, meats and seafood. Enjoy the people watching along famous South Street or catch an act at the Theatre of Living Arts (The "TLA") and some fantastic pizza at DeLorenzo's! Or shop at antique stores and second-hand stores on Sixth Street and unique collection of South Street stores. Seamstresses, take delight: this area houses Philadelphia's famous "Fabric Row" on South Fourth Street. Restaurants to hit include Southwark, Supper and the creperie at Beau Monde, where you can finish dinner and stroll upstairs to our favorite place to dance South of Northern Liberties, L'Etage! Pennsport/East Passyunk This trendy area south of Washington Avenue is up and coming, quickly filling with boutiques, quick eats, gastropubs and upscale eateries, mostly located on Passyunk (said "Pashyunk") Avenue. Southwest Center City/Graduate Hospital "G-Ho" is adjacent to Rittenhouse Square, making this South Philadelphia neighborhood an up-and-coming residential area. Residents enjoy easy access to jobs in Center City, in University City and at Graduate Hospital on South Street. Some of our favorite pubs include Grace Tavern, Sidecar and Ten Stone. It's also home to St. Alban's Street, which was featured in "The Sixth Sense." Chinatown/Loft District Just north of Reading Terminal Market, which is a wonderful produce and prepared foods haven near the Convention Center, this neighborhood is home to many shops and markets as well as easy access to 676/the Vine Street Expressway. Dine at a variety of restaurants, including one of our favorite date spots, Vietnam! On the other side of 676, you'll find the Loft District that is just like it sounds: home to very spacious and affordable mostly raw loft living and some emerging nightspots such as Prohibition Tavern and its restaurant, Cafe Lift, which is an excellent breakfast destination. Northern Liberties This neighborhood was formerly mostly industrial and since the 80's, has experienced a rebirth into residential and commercial stores and sits just North of Old City. Most of the buildings have been converted into condos and still retains a raw, industrial feel. You'll find everything from studios and boutiques to restaurants, nightclubs and even a bowling alley! Residents like The Palm Market, a market great for the unique and the mundane, and The Foodery, which supplies the locals beers from all over! Northern Liberties is home to Ortlieb's, a quaint old jazz house, and a wonderful community park and dog park, Orianna Hill. Fishtown This riverfront residential community is where Brooke and Ryan call home, as well as many old timers and newcomers alike. It's currently enjoying a large influx of restaurants and a few galleries and shops. Johnny Brenda's, at the most Southern corner of Fishtown, is the most popular nightspot, serving great food and offering up many people's favorite music venue in the city where you can catch plenty of local and national acts. We also love Memphis Taproom, at the corner of Memphis and Cumberland Streets, offering up great food and a place to meet great neighbors. Greengrow Farms, a hydroponic garden covering 1 acre, serves this neighborhood. Fishtown is also home to historic Palmer Cemetery and great coffeeshops and a Wawa with gas! Northeast Philadelphia A bit more suburban in feel but an entirely huge and diverse group of neighborhoods combine this area North of Center City. Plenty of affordable airlites, twins and rows can be found along with the large commercial corridor along Route 1. West Philadelphia/University City This area just across the Schuylkill expressway is home to Drexel and Penn, as well as a host of diverse neighborhoods. Homes mostly consist of grand victorian twins with the occasional section of airlites and rows. Enjoy Clark Park, the coffee shops, wonderful shopping centered around the universities and even a movie theatre! This section of the City is greener than most and one of the few where you'll expect to find a front yard! Access to Center City is convenient on the trolley. Try Local 44 on Spruce for great brews as well as Dock Street Brewing Company in the old Firehouse on Baltimore! Brooke also loves two Stephen Starr restaurants here: Distitro and Pod! Manayunk/Roxborough/East Falls/Wissahickon If a yard and parking appeal to you as well as a small town feel within city living, take the commuter train a bit North to these friendly neighborhoods. A large commercial district with many quaint boutiques and restaurants as well as an expanding furniture district are at home along Main Street, Manayunk. This neighborhood is a great choice for folks who work up in the King of Prussia area but still want to be close to Center City as well as those who want to be close to Kelly Drive and Fairmount Park! Mount Airy/Chestnut Hill/Germantown Further up idyllic Lincoln Drive, you'll find these lovely neighborhoods with the most acreage per house the City has to offer, if that's your thing! About a 30+ minute commute to Center City, you can't beat the foliage and landscaping anywhere in the city! If space is key, you'll find it most affordable in these areas. Enjoy a Summer stroll along the shops and restaurants along Germantown Avenue, host to a variety of different events. This area is served by the beloved Weaver's Way Co-Op and the Chestnut Hill hardware store is always a fun trip! Back to top |
